Anaerobic adhesives are now being used in more demanding load bearing cylindrical joint applications. The key to the success of such applications is to combine the adhesive with a reduced interference fit and still achieve high static and dynamic torsional strength. To develop such applications required a strength prediction method to aid in the design process. An empirically based PC software package was developed and has enabled assessment of the feasibility of a proposed joint design before the prototype testing stage. This approach is demonstrated through the development of several recent automotive applications including driveline gear bonding.
