Because of their attractive high temperature structural properties, carbon-carbon composites are being considered as hot structural mterials for advanced hypersonic vehicle airframes. Before such an application can be realized, however, adequate oxidation protection must be demonstrated for these carbon-carbon composites. This paper focuses on this issue of oxidation protection. A number of coated carbon-carbon specimens developed for aeropropulsive environments were tested in simulated aerostructural environments. Maximum test temperatures were 2800 F, and pressures ranged from 0.03 atm to 1 atm. The specimens were exposed intermittently to high humidity between tests. The test medium was air. Test results concerning the effects of coating thickness, substrate architecture, coating composition, and substrate surface preparation on the oxidation resistance of coated carbon-carbon composites in a representative hypersonic vehicle environment are discussed.
