Major fuel savings can be made by reducing the aerodynamic drag of trucks, particularly during motorway operation. Previous work by truck manufacturers and body builders in isolation has meant that the full benefits of truck aerodynamics have not been achieved in real transport operations. This paper describes work on the reduction of truck cab and van drag and the development of aerodynamic add on devices. Details of a collaborative project sponsored by the Department of Energy and combining the expertise of a truck manufacturer, body builder, consultant designers and truck operator are given. This work has fulfilled the potential for truck aerodynamic reduction, producing a vehicle with a drag coefficient comparable to modern cars which has given fuel economy improvements of twenty five per cent during normal operations.
