The bumper system is an important feature of a vehicle. The geometry, colouring and material of a bumper can be used to create visual impact and styling and packaging constraints often dictate the available deformation space for the bumper system. Obviously the bumper system can have great aerodynamic significance, with many vehicles having an integrated bumper and spoiler system. Following bumper systems are considered: Hydraulic absorber, RIM urethane, polyethylene honeycomb, closed box structural plastic bumpers, and energy absorbing foams. The described simulation techniques are: Spring-mass modelling and finite elemement modelling.
