Differetial gearing is introduced into the automotive driveline for the purpose of allowing torque input to the mechanism to be equally split between two outputs whilst permitting those outputs to rotate at different speeds. A true differential ensures that the average value of the output speeds is always equal to the input speed, and a totally efficient unit would have output torques that are equal to each other and add up to the input vale. Such mechanisms are familiar in all automotive vehicles fitted between the driving wheels in either front or rear-wheel drive applications, and between the axles in four-wheel drive vehicles. Following a general introduction to limited-slip differentials, specific discussion is directed towards the design, construction and testing of the Mechadrive torque-sensing mechanical unit. The application of this novel mechanisms is considered with respect to automotive front and rear axles with particular to the special requirement of the central position of a 4 WD driveline.
