Active suspension came into the limelight around the mid 1980's with development by Lotus, culminating in systems being fitted to Formula 1 racing cars. Such systems, also fitted to road vehicles, became known as fully active systems - the important feature being that a hydraulic actuator replaced the conventional suspension components (spring and damper) and its force output was controlled over a wide frequency range using electro-hydraulic components. This paper attempts to summarise the current level of understanding of the various approaches to controlling vehicle suspension. Observations about fruitful avenues for further developments are made.
