Cars experience an increasing susceptibility to crosswinds. This arises in part from greater performance and increased exposure to the elements, especially on motorways, but also from car shapes evolved for aerodynamic drag reduction. The problem can be compounded by reduction in vehicle weight although recent trends have been in the opposite direction. A simple two degree of freedom model is used to assess the contribution of various vehicle characteristics to yaw rate and deviation under cross-wind conditions. A comparison between theoretical and actual vehicle deviations is presented to validate the model. Changes to vehicle shape which improve crosswind sensitivity are listed. The detrimental effect on aerodynamic drag is noted.
