A number of hyperbaric automatic welding systems are now operational. These first generation systems are all based on using diver-habitat technicians for installing and servicing equipment. Given the inevitable trend towards the development of deep water oil resources, a second generation hyperbaric automatic welding system is being developed which will permit diverless pipeline tie-ins or repairs. Such a system will have a major impact on both safety and costs for deep water hyperbaric welds. This presentation describes the development of the diverless system and the evolutions with respect to the first generation systems.
