U.S. Naval design requirements for severe duty helicopter transmissions que for 30 minutes after loss of primary lubrication. Conventional gear material (carburized AISI 9310) does not maintain metallurgical properties at elevated temperatures encountered during this 'oil-out' condition. A relatively new material, Alloy 53, a high hot hardness (H3) carburizing steel, was chosen as the candidate for power transmitting gears; however, material behavior characteristics such as the formation of passive oxide films, carbon absorption and diffusion rates were as yet unknown. Thus, thermal processing parameters for gear geometries, especially those of fine pitch, required development. These processes, including pre-carburizing conditioning and carburizing treatment, as well as hardening practices were established for production of various gear geometries.
