Automotive engine assembly has been difficult to automate until now. However, significant cost advantages can be expected if robots could be used to automate engine assembly tasks and if they could ensure the required production and quality levels. In this article, the types of tasks performed during engine assembly have been examined, followed by a discussion of some R. a. D. activities recently carried out at the GM Technical Center to examine the feasibility of assembling automotive engines by robots. The results of these experimental studies have been provided and the paper concludes with some comments on the efficiency of integrated assembly systems using flexible automation.
