A small number of structural components such as leaf springs and drive shafts have reached high volume production because viable processes have been developed to suit their geometries, but clearly, a new versatile production process that will permit fabrication of high volume structural components with complex geometries is required. Resin transfer moulding (RTM), also known in the UK as resin injection, has been identified as the most suitable production route for large structural components, particularly if the process can be automated and the cycle time reduced. RTM has been used in low volumes for vehicles such as the Lotus Excel, Renault (Matra) Espace, and Delorean for body assemblies and panels. A research program is currently directed at assessing the viability of RTM as a volume production process and identifying the development work required to eliminate problems.
