Success of HIP with metals is closely related to casting densification, superalloy development and consolidation, and cladding and diffusion bonding. Use of castings in aircraft engines has grown by a factor of 4 since 1982, and is projected to continue. Growth of HIP vessel size correlates well with this growth. Superalloy HIP'ing has been constant for nearly five years and is declining. Only the success of present new alloy development, especially in titanium systems, is likely to change that. A brief review of some of that development is presented. Cladding is a relatively new field whose major application has been in oil and gas well equipment. A review of this technology and related works will show directions that can be expected to provide applications in the future.
