In this paper the authors explain how continuously-variable control of vibration damping can be achieved by exploiting the electro-rheological (ER) effect. To introduce the subject, the performance gains which can be expected from a variable suspension damper are summarised. It is then shown how the damping level in a simple ER device can be controlled through the application of a suitable electrric stimulus. It is noted that the damping forces produced in an ER device can depart significantly from those associated with an 'ideal' viscous device. Finally the design, construction and preliminary testing of a more realistic ER shock absorber is described. Throughout the paper suggestions are made for further work in this area.
