An experimental investiation has been carried out into the drum dynamics involved in the sequal of large commercial vehicle drum brakes. The drum modes are found to be meridian modes, stationary in space, and hence rotating relative to the drum. The measured behaviour is consistent with the presence of two identical normal meridian modes, superposed but phase shifted spatially and temporally relative to each other. The effect of asymmetry in the drum structure on these modes has been investigated and is suggested as a palliative against sequeal.
