Steady state engine mapping is extended by the creation of maps in the domains of torque and speed derivatives. The mapping model in this instance was calibrated from chassis dynamometer tests on manual and automatic transmission vehicles. Real time correction for emissions sampling delays and analyser responses by a mini computer, and development of weighting techniques are important steps in the success of the transient mapping method. It is shown that the model improves the explained variance of 2 Hz fuel rates by 10 % and emissions by 45 % compared with steady state mapping and single equation models.
