The use of corrosion resistant alloys (CRA) in the design of offshore marine pipelines has gained prominence over the last five years. Prompted by the development of increasingly corrosive reservoirs as well as the advancements in subsea completion and satellite wellhead technology, CRA line pipe materials have been installed in the United Kingdom and Dutch sectors of the North Sea. Until 1985, most of the CRA line pipe was procured as a solid wall product; however, with the construction of the ARCO Thames infield system, the first austenitic stainless clad pipe was introduced. Following this, the Oil and Natural Gas Commission specified a clad nickel base austenitic alloy for two infield pipelines to be constructed in Bombay High; with British Petroleum selecting a similar alloy for a lateral section of the Ravenspurn Field in the Southern North Sea sector.
