The undersea environment is the main operating arena of the world's major navies, it is also rapidly becoming an area of intense commercial activity. Whether an underwater vessel is Naval or Merchant it is important, for differing reasons, for the vehicle to remain submerged as long as possible. The powerplant which enables long submerged endurances to be achieved is the nuclear rector. However, such technology is not available to all, particularly in the commercial sector, and is expensive. Any other form of powerplant which can increase the submerged endurance of a submarine is obviously of interest. Such a powerplant is the Stirling engine. The study described in this paper demonstrates the great potential of the underwater Stirling engine.
