Sound deadening and sound absorption products are of ever growing importance in the automotive industry because of the increasing requirements for good acoustic insulation. The noise in cars from engine, wheels, and exhaust is transmitted both through the body of the car and through the air. The degree of noise depends upon the type of engine and suspensions. The best way to thoroughly minimize noise transmission through the body as well as through the air via a spring and mass combination. This can be achieved by using a filled polymeric barrier layer coupled with low density polyurethane foam molded in situ. This paper will discuss the advantages of this type of product and detail the equipment currently available for manufacturing of foamed backed carpets and heavy layers.
