Aluminium alloy ship structures are prone to fatigue induced cracking. Satisfactory repair by welding is often difficult and complicated by the need to remove inflammable linings, damageable cables and equipment, and to produce the necessary access for repair. Consequently 'in situ' welding is of poor quality, with a fatigue life inferior to that of the original plate. Further crack initiation can be prevented by adhesively bonding a suitable reinforcement, of adequate strength and stiffness, across the repair weld. The paper describes the application of carbon fibre reinforced plastic patches to ship structures. It discusses the factors governing patch design, surface preparation and choice of adhesive. In addition it describes stress analyses to indicate how patch shape and adhesive thickness affects stress concentration.
