Voids exist in today's manufacturing facilities with respect to implementation of automatic fastening of airframe structures. A multitude of small subassemblies containing only a few fastener installations, as well as the final assembly of large skin panels to fuselage frames, are not currently receiving the benefits of automatic fastening techniques. This paper discusses how the implementation of portable, miniature drill and rivet machinery could be the key to efficient, economical solutions to many present and future applications.
