This paper describes a design package for composite structures manufactured by filament winding. The main elements of the procedure are 3D graphics for the construction and display of components of complex geometry, applications programs which predict the behaviour of material as it is wound onto a surface, and software for structural design. An important feature of the analysis is the ability to simulate the effect of friction between fibre and the mandrel, which allows the reinforcement to be steered along a path to give optimum winding angles. The mathematical employed in the process are quite general and are able to cater for surfaces without symmetry, together with material in a variety of forms, including wet fibre tows, prepregs and reinforced thermoplastics. In the paper the package is demonstrated by application to the design of a pressure vessel and an aircraft fuselage.
