The control of paint solvent emissions can sometimes be achieved by reformulation or by changes in paint application methods. However, where Department of Defense or other customer specifications must be complied with, this may not be possible. This paper discusses three installations of paint solvent emission control systems at aerospace plants to meet VOC/ROG regulations. In each case, a unique activated carbon fiber absorbent was used to concentrate the emissions before incineration to reduce system operating costs. The history of each project will be discussed to show how the most-cost effective solution to the problem was chosen and performance of each system will be discussed. Details of the system design will also be discussed to show how it can be applied to any paint spray booth exhaust system.
