As a means to increase productivity through improved accuracy, British Shipbuilders are investigating the use of high power lasers for low heat input materials processing. Research has been conducted at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne to develop the procedures for the single sided welding of T joints applicable to ship structural fabrication. The paper describes trials using a 10 kW CO2 laser to produce structurally acceptable joints within conventional fabrication tolerances using the 'skid' welding process with a filler wire input. Weld properties are discussed in comparison to the requirements set by design authorities for conventional processes in shipbuilding.
