The advent of high temperature advanced composite materials has necessitated the development of high-temperature composite tooling. Carbon-fiber/Avimid N polyimide high-temperature tooling technology has been developed to fabricate quality parts from prepregs based on thermoplastics. Because of the high Tg (750-770 Cel), toughness, and extraordinary thermal-oxidative stability of the Avimid N polyimide matrix, such tools offer potential for long, useful life. Other advantages of Avimid N tooling are short lead times, light weight for easy handling, low heat capacity for energy efficiency, and low coefficient for thermal expansion.
