This article contains information about a dieselelectrical drive system with a flywheel storage unit for a local public transport bus. It deals particularly with the results of test drives using a vehicle fitted with a system of this type. The Magnetodynamic Storage Unit (MDS), a flywheel storage system developed by Magnet-Motor GmbH, serves to absorb the brake energy and to reduce the diesel motor power. Using this system a small 50 kW car diesel engine can fulfill the same traffic service in the city as a 150 kW diesel in a conventional vehicle. In the test drives which have been carried out since 1985 this drive system and storage unit has proved itself in practice. Furthermore, it was shown that at the present stage of development, 60 % of the brake energy which can theoretical be recovered was actually brought back onto the road.
