A nonlinear sleeve joint model which accounts for the presence of clearances, impact damping and dry (Coulombic) friction is developed. By studying the free and forced response of this model, it is seen that the overall damping appears to be predominantly viscous-like in nature. This is found to be true even for the cases studied where dry friction is the sole source of energy dissipation. The results are supported by the study of simplified joint models which use one-way viscous dampers and purely linear viscous elements to emulate the effects of impact and frictional damping.
