NASA Lewis Research Center and other U.S. Government agencies are funding experimental and analytical efforts to improve understanding of Stirling thermodynamic losses. The status of several loss characterization efforts is reviewed. NASA's objective is to improve Stirling engine design capability to support the development of new engines for space power. Several development problems, related to inadequate understanding of Stirling losses, are reviewed. Loss characterization tests may suggest that a new weighting, in the design process, of the various losses is needed; these results may eventually have a significant impact on engine hardware.
