Some of the most important considerations in selecting the propeller type for passenger ships have been discussed. Highly skewed propellers are popular on passenger ships as they minimise vibration excitation from this source, an important factor in passenger comfort. It is shown how these propellers need not impair propulsive efficiency because of their inbuilt 'load equalising capability' in an irregular flow. The tip loading on the blades in such conditions can be better than that or more conventional screws and is a reason why tip cavitation may occur over the complete sweep of the blades. The intensity of the impulsive forces on the water increasing cavitation when entering the wake peak are reduced, as are the higher forces in the cavitation collapse phase when leaving the wake.
