A preliminary design was created for a SWATH vessel intended to carry 1200 passengers in a cruising role between West Coast North America and the Orient. The arrangement was based on the P and O Cruise Liner Royal Princess and the hull design was based on trends shown in a number of small SWATH ships currently in commerical service. In a comparison between the SWATH design and Royal Princess the SWATH inevitably required more beam and draft and also a greater power for a given speed which must increase operating costs. An increase in construction cost of about 25 % would be inevitable as a result of more steel mass and power. However, the design was successful in including a greater number of cabins with their own private verandahs which would result in an increase in revenue of about 20 %. A SWATH ship is likely to be a more stable platform in a seaway which will add to the passengers comfort. With an expanding cruise market the prospective operators may be willing to suffer the higher capital cost of a reasonable profit marging could be realised. The SWATH concept may provide the necessary platform to improve standards of accommodation, entertainment and recreational facilities in order to entice more and more people to holiday afloat.
