Modern passenger ships as well as larger passenger and car ferries call for very detailed strength and vibration analysis. In particular the effectiveness of the superstructure has to be evaluated for every novel design regarding both longitudinal strength and stiffness. Additionally, the transverse strength and stiffness of these relatively high ships, where transverse bulkheads are avoided or kept at a minimum in order not to obstruct large public spaces and traffic, needs careful investigation. On the other hand considerable weight savings are possible compared to a design according to Classification Society rules by making the upper superstructure decks and longitudinal walls fully effective. After a brief outline of the particular problems, this paper will describes the analysis process and the reasoning behind an efficient design using three vessels, two cruise liners and a large passenger/car ferry for illustration. Vibration analysis and the philosophy for deck design are also covered.
