Because of their large accommidation capacity passenger ships require a complex structural design with big superstructures. For safety reasons, weight optimisation and stability requirements, the structural behaviour of the hull has to be taken into account, the common approach based on linear stress distribution being insuffient. Furthermore, the limitation of noise and vibration levels for passenger comfort requires extensive dynamic analysis with finite element computations. This paper presents a series of extensometric measurements carried out on the Sovereign of the Seas, and different theoretical approaches to evaluate stress distribution are discussed. A correlation with measurements is also presented, as is a comprehensive study of structure using three-dimensional finite element analysis in order to determine the vibration levels in the different parts of the ship.
