At the design stage of propulsion installation it is very important to consider the profit of the shipowners as well as the comfort of the passengers. This paper will outline how practical experience provided the background for the resilient mounting of two 12-cylinder medium-speed engines and one 5-cylinder auxiliary engine. All three engines are of the MAN B a. W type 28/32 with 220 kW/cylinders. The resilient design was carried out and tested where the insulation of the structure borne noise was recorded over the operational range. The paper also discusses compromises in propeller design to obtain a flexible and efficient operation with minimum cavitation and describes how the system with eight operational modes makes it possible to choose a power supply where fuel consumption has been minimised.
