Modern microelectronics nowadays offer sufficient scope for a partial switch from conventional, fixed-setting spring/damper elements on vehicles to oscillation components which can be varied at sufficient speed. This permits a reappraisal of the familiar conflict between ride comfort and road safety. Illustrated by the example of the fully-automatic adaptive system for damping force regulation developed by BMW and known as Electronic Damper Control, it is shown how continually requirement-oriented damping can be achieved with the appropriate system configuration and design, by recouse to a frequency-dependent control strategy.
