The introduction of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) for commercial vehicles has made it possible to control skidding during full brake applications, a phenomena much feared by drivers. It was an obvious next development objective to employ a practical traction control to prevent the driving wheels from spinning when moving off and accelerating. The aim set and achieved with a traction control was to assure adequate lateral forces at the driving wheels in the optimum slip range for such driving states coupled with the best possible traction requirements to achieve the maximum stability and steerability and a perceptible reduction in driver stress in critical environmental situations. Logically combining the anti-lock system with the traction control (ASR), to form a directional control safety concept, is a further contribution to an improvement in active safety and thus to general safety on the roads.
