Current cryogenic fuel turbopumps use ball bearings, and as a result of premature bearing failure, have short and unpredictable lives. Process fluid foil bearings, having established exceptionally good reliability records for many high-speed turbomachines at extreme temperatures, are incorporated in the design of a 10-lb/sec and 5500-psi cryogenic liquid hydrogen turbopump. This turbopump is rigid, compact, and totally free from critical speed resonances.
