Until recently the only viable form of energy storage for electric vehicles has been the lead acid battery. These batteries have relatively low energy densities resulting in electric vehicles with high weight, high cost and limited range. After nearly a century of development, electric vehicles have only been developed commercially for use as milk floats and for making local deliveries. Recent developments in battery technology, such as sodium sulphur batteries, show potentially large increases in energy density. It is shown in this paper that electric urban vehicles fitted with the new batteries will become attractive alternatives to internal combustion engined vehicles for many uses.
