Plastic zone development and crack mouth opening displacement in circumferentially surface-flawed line pipe subjected to pure bending have been predicted using three-dimensional finite elements. The analysis considered both material (elastic-plastic) and geometric nonlinearities. Predicted failure moments were shown to compare favourably with a number of analytical plastic instability models. The results from this investigation have been used to assess the degree of conservatism inherent in the newest version of the Canadian Gas Pipeline Standard CSA Z184.
