Tether systems offer numerous advantages to operations in space, particularly when used in combination with Space Stations and other platforms. This paper summarizes the results of a session having the same title that was held at the Second International Tether Conference, in Venice, Italy. Included are considerations of improved gravity gradient stabilization, provision of desired microgravity levels with a tethered elevator, using tethers to improve docking maneuvers, to allow construction and deployment of solar sails, and with electrodynamic tethers to generate electrical power for use on the Station. Uses for expendable tethers, tethered waste disposal, return of Station material, vehicle deployment/reentry with tethers, and a sling tether maneuver for orbit transfer are discussed. Possible implementation scenarios are presented and issues which must be addressed in integrating tethers on platforms are identified.
