The following paper is divided in two parts. Described in the first part are several investigative metallurgical techniques for assessing journal burnoff failure. An overview of their application to a specific incident involving a plain journal bearing is also presented. In the second part of this paper is described a generalized model for simulating journal burnoff. Its derivation which entails the coupling of thermal and mechanical techniques is illustrated. Although we have restricted our analyses to plain journal bearings, it is to be noted that the techniques to be described in both parts of this paper are equally applicable to roller bearing journals.
