Remarkable improvements in laser oscillator performance, productivity improvements in production fields, and shorter life cycles of more sophistiucated products within the market place have been made possible through advancing technological innovation. These factors have triggered the growth and number of uses laser technology is applied to in many different production fields. In the automobile parts manufacturing industry, this same trend is observed. More laser processing equipment is being installed for welding and cutting processes, and for the producing electrical parts (alternators, starters, ignition parts), heat exchangers (cooler related parts), small motors (fan motors, wiper motors), and display units (meter panels). This paper first discusses types of laser processing equipment, their application, and where they are used in automobile production. In this discussion, the reason why laser processing is now being widely introduced to the automobile parts manufacturing industry is studied and compared with other manufacturing processes with consideration to energy application. Next, automobile parts currently manufactured using laser processing are explained to provide examples. In the last section, future laser processing technology and requirements for hardware development are discussed.
