McDonnell Aircraft is currently using a six axis gantry robot to perform routing or trimming of contoured sheet metal aircraft skins. The working envelope of the robot is divided into four identical sub-envelopes. The operator may perform setup in one zone while the robot simultaneously trims a part in an adjacent zone, resulting in free routing time. Part programs are taught by the operator on the production site. The cell is controlled by a stand-alone microcomputer. Special features of the cell include a constant force compliant end effector and automatic coordinate transformation, allowing the teaching and running of any part in any of the four zones.
