Motor vehicles are a significant source of reactive hydrocarbons and other primary pollutants which are released into air moving over urban centres. The timescales of the photochemical processes which take place may vary from minutes to many hours but the net effect is conversion of primary to secondary pollutants (ozone, acidic species). The reactivity of individual hydrocarbons is an important consideration, so knowledge of the concentration of the individual hydrocarbons is an important contribution to a fuller understanding of the short and long range effects of the formation of photochemical pollution and the conversion of primary pollutants to acidic species. Gas chromatography is the only means of obtaining data on the many individual hydrocarbon species in emissions. For motor vehicle exhausts standardised procedures have been developed at Warren Spring Laboratory for producing emission samples over the full range of vehicle speeds. Emission data can be related via traffic statistics to produce estimates of the contribution of the current vehicle fleet to the emission of a particular pollutant. Quantitative data have been produced over the full speed range for selected compounds. Analytical procedures will be described and results presented to illustrate how the variation in emissions of individual components can be studied over a range of driving conditions. Data from two vehicles are presented to illustrate further the potential of this approach.
