In the Netherlands, a policy has been developed to diminish air pollution to a more acceptable level both on a local and on a large geographical scale. An essential element are emission target levels for the various source categories involved using extensive data bases on the actual and predicted future pollution situation and on health and environmental effects. The technologies available for gasoline and diesel powered vehicles are briefly reviewed and an assessment of achievable abatement of HC, NOx and particulate emissions is made. Data on cost-effectiveness of the technologies considered are included.
