Vertical operations of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft are inhibited by the interactions of the lift engine jets with the ground. The jets generate ground wall-jets and stir up loose dirt and other debris, causing hot gas and foreign objects to be ingested into the aircraft engines. Using a large VTOL aircraft as an example and correlating jet experiments, this paper demonstrates the problem and shows how forward and after motion of the aircraft can be used to alleviate it at the expense of increasing field length to about 300 feet, assuming zero wind. With wind added, takeoff distances can be shortened, but landing distance may be lengthened and landing maneuvers become more complex. More work needs to be done to obtain information on jet development and interaction with the ground in order to quantify more accurately takeoff and landing flight patterns that avoid the hot gas ingestion (HGI) and foreign object damage (FOD) problems.
