The process of pultrusion efficiently and precisely combines continuous forms of reinforcement with a variety of resin systems to produce structural composite parts for the automotive and truck/trailer market. Extensions of the basic pultrusion process, including machinery modifications, incorporation of compression molding, etc., enable the pultruder to make new products such as an aluminum/carbon-graphite composite drive shaft, epoxy-graphite upper control arm, and other products requiring unusual fiber placement patterns. This paper reviews pultrusion's flexibility as a stimulus for other automotive and truck/trailer applications.
