The Industrial Modernization Incentives Program (IMIP) is a joint venture between the government and industry to accelerate the implementation of modern equipment in the industrial base. IMIPs are implemented where competitive market forces are insufficient to motivate independent contractor modernization, and where significant benefits such as cost reduction, elimination of production bottlenecks, improved quality, reliability, maintainability and improved surge capability can be expected to accrue to the government. The short-term IMIP objective is to reduce defense costs, lead times and to increase the quality of manufacturing, through productivity gains. The long-term objective is a strong industrial base.
