Modern turbofan engines with bypass ratios near 5:1 are reaching a fuel efficiency plateau. Further major improvements in these engines are unlikely because of practical limits to component efficiencies. One way to further reduce engine fuel consumption is to increase bypass ratio, which produces higher propulsive efficiency, but also increases power plant drag and weight. A study of the installation of higher bypass ratio engines on the 747 and 767 has been completed. The trades in engine fuel consumption, weight and drag have been evaluated and the installation constraints have been identified.
