The evaluation and verification of aircraft propolsion system operability presents a challenge to flight test engineers. This challenge includes the investigation of distorted inlet airflow effects, compressor stall, internally generated acoustic disturbances, and component instabilities. The investigation of these anomalies during flight test often accompanies a requirement to evaluate new synergistic designs for engine control and intergration. The Air Force Flight Test Center is developing flight test methodologies to enhance the productivty and safety of propulsion system testing. These methodologies include the utilization of tailored flight test instrumentation, unique test maneuvers, advanced data systems, improved data processing techniques, and a close coordination with ground test facilities. These test methodologies have significantly contributed to an understanding of propulsion system operability as revealed by flight test. Flight test methodologies and resultant data which exemplify the evaluation, verification, and investigations of propulsion system operability are presented. These include investigations of compressor stall, gas generator aerodynamic instability, internal acoustic disturbances, and digital control strategies.
