One of the major concerns for the engine manufacturers with respect to STOVL aircraft is the type of propulsion system adopted. The reason for this is not only the implications on the basic engine cycle and component technology, but also the design implications regarding safety and performance during critical phases of aircraft operation - particularly take-off. This is because of the need to support some, if not all, of the aircraft weight on the engine thrust and also the possible need to make a propulsion system 'mode' change during a critical part of the aircraft operation. Take-off performance is aso an important factor to be considered. The ground roll to unstick, the time to fully wingborne flight, and the fuel used during this operation all will have an impact on the choice of propulsion system. A major question concerning the choice of the propulsion concept is whether or not the system has total thrust vectoring nozzles. Some systems have only limited or even no vectoring capability on some of the (usually the front) lifting jets. In these systems, flow has to be transferred from front to rear nozzles (or v.v.) to provide the required overall thrust vector and aircraft balance during an aircraft transition from jet-to wing-borne flight. Some comparisons between the operation and performance of different STOVL propulsion concepts are made.
