This paper outlines an approach to use the copper version of the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) standard protocol over 75- Omega cables found in MIGSTD-1553 or 1553 installations of modern weapon systems. Lockheed Martin has proven the feasibility of this concept by successfully testing ATM and Fast Ethernet over 75- Omega 1553 shielded twisted pair cable. This paper outlines an open system architecture based on the ATM protocols (SONET STS-3c, and its optical counterpart OC-3c) as a basis to integrate avionics systems across existing copper lines to provide future video, voice and data services. The proposed open system architecture is based on the use of existing shielded twisted pair (STP) wiring, careful consideration of product upgrades, and replacement of 1553 termination points with point-to-point ATM switch circuitry. This paper summarizes a method to increase the network bandwidth of legacy aircraft with minimal rewiring or changes in the harnesses inside the aircraft infrastructure, which is a major cost inhibitor in the upgrade of legacy aircraft avionics.
